The cataloging implementation group is talking about simplifying our
LIOCLN conventions and we are considering a new model for the 949$a
which would not require square brackets or even the MYG code.
Our goal is to simplify the amount of keying the cataloger has to do.
If we can come up with a coding scheme that doesn't require square
brackets, but, might involve the use of some other defined
punctuation, would that matter or affect the programming Geac would
do?
We are assuming that the 949 "Expansion Table" work would apply to
both monograph 949-852 translations as well as 949-866 translations.
Geac successfully handled the periodical translations in GLIS because we
had special codes (MYP) for periodicals. Could we affect this same
kind of distinction by using indicator values off of the 949?
Where does this 'Expansion Table' get keyed in? Is there a table
limit size?
I'm assuming that its invoked during UBIX and that UBIX
is a filter regardless of whether its a PRISM to ADVANCE or a
GeoCat-Advance loader? (Does the new Geo-Cat assume all of the UBII
and UBIX conventions of ADVANCE?)
Eric has prepared a discussion paper on this proposal for our
cataloging implementation meeting tomorrow. Hopefully, we'll have
something specific to send you by Friday for your comments.
