Hi,
First, with regards to DHCP, if we find something acting as a DHCP
server, we generally try to shut it down ASAP. I'm pretty sure the
Airport software changed so it doesn't act as a DHCP server by default,
making them less of a problem, and so few people run Linux/Unix systems
(and those who do know what they're doing) that rogue dhcp servers
aren't a huge problem.
As of right now, we don't require students to register their devices.
If we need to shut off a machine, we shut off the port it's currently
using, but sometimes, these machines pop back up elsewhere on the
network, so those ports get shut off too. We're in the process of
testing NetReg (my port's actually one of the few netreg ports on campus
right now), and it looks like we're going to roll it out soon since it
seems to work well.
That being said, there are 2 things to consider when using a netreg-like
system.
1) In Windows XP, there's a setting (don't remember which off the top of
my head) which causes the system to assign itself a MAC address, one
that's software generated at that. Furthermore, 2 XP machines will
generate the same MAC address, so machine A could register and machine B
could get on the network without ever registering.
2) What do you do w/ devices that can't pull up a browser, such as an
XBox. It's not a big deal right now, but once XBox's online gaming
network goes live this summer, that'll be more of a concern.
