Hey there everyone. I'm the coordinator for the academic initiatives theme
at this year's symposium. I wanted to make a call out for some program
submissions in this area.

The theme is basically geared towards addressing issues beyond the nitty
gritty technical aspects of ResNet departments, and what we all do when
things start running smoothly and we wonder what to do with ourselves in
order to provide additional services to our colleges/universities!

Here are some general categories that would fall in this category, to get
the ideas flowing:

-ways in which ResNet interacts with academic departments
-user education through workshops, classes, webpages, etc.
-web portals
-fostering new computing environments
-addressing the computing needs (educational/hardware/etc) of students with
varying backgrounds (computer-related or otherwise)
-network policies for student users
-integrating newly admitted students into the network (before they arrive
on campus)
-student organizations and computing needs
-career preparation/assistance for ResNet employees and/or users
-views on the place of computing in education
(see http://slashdot.org/articles/02/02/13/0039203.shtml?tid=146 !)

Those are just a few things off of the top of my head, to give you an idea
of what the theme is about. However, I would love to see some things that
you are doing at your institution that haven't even occurred to me! That
is the point, really, isn't it?! If you have any questions about the theme,
feel free to email me. The site for proposal submissions is
http://www.resnetsymposium.org/programming/ .

Thanks,
Lisa
