Hi!
At 09:59 PM 1/30/2002 -0500, you wrote:
>What types of Ethernet cards work the best on all platforms?
Well, that depends. What works well for other folks may not work well for
you. Some networks have their own quirks depending on the hardware in them.
I like 3com, smc and netgear. But be aware that your students are liable to
show up with any old thing. Unless you only support a certain number of
cards you will have to deal with them as well. Another thing to note is
that if your students are bringing/buying new computers many have ethernet
already built in or pre-installed.
>Do they have any quirks?
Both the cards and the operating system have their own quirks. The archives
are good place to look for information on them.
>Do you know of a vendor who sells them 'below retail'?
No but I would check with the purchasing department of your school.
>What are the most common Ethernet problems that you have run into?
Misconfigurations of the os. Bad or mis-wired ports. Driver problems. Many
of your problems will depend on if your network is static or dhcp. Getting
one octet wrong in a static address can cause it not to work. Other
applications can also interfere; there have been reports of network
connections not working after the install or removal of aol and some
personal firewalls.

What is your support model?
Good Luck!
