In order for a resident to get assistance with a connection, they have to
set up an appointment. We track the appointments in an Access/ASP
database. Our staff work time is checked against the appointment database
and they only get paid for the appointments they go to. We have phone
staff who set up the actual appointments who work staffed hours. The phone
is staffed during the day, so someone is always around to make sure they
are working. We have computer labs that are staffed in the evenings. It
is up to the student Lab Supervisors (doing rounds) to make sure their
staff is working during the staffed hours. We also use a Employee
Performance Citation. If an employee misses a shift or appointment (or is
not working during a shift) they are written up and have to meet with our
senior student staff. After two write ups for the same issue, the employee
meets with a full time staff member. This usually results in the employee
not working for us any longer. Most of our staff realizes after the first
write up that we are watching them and they work harder. We have only had
a couple of staff in the last few year who we have had to release. In
addition, we also give performance citations and points to staff who work
above our expectations. 10 Points can be redeemed for gift certificates to
local restaurants, movie theaters, or music stores.
