As the ResNet Initiative moves from promise to reality, we need to redraw the
scope of the MacOLxx project. This note attempts to clarify the expected
deliverables and the schedule.
By September 1993 any student in a dorm or an ILG with a Macintosh should be
capable of using any of the OL services from a native interface on their Mac.
This means they should be able to compose questions, and send them to the Athena
Consultants (OLC) , or to TAs (OLTA) or the Reference Librarians (OWL).
Although it would be desirable, we don't think the additional Mac-based tools
for answering these questions will be defined, and ready to be delivered by
September. We are committed to begin developing whatever these tools need to be
as soon as the "question-asking" tool has been completed, and delivered. As
always, each responders' specific needs will need to be understood well before
we can create those tools.
As we move into Fall, responders will need to continue to use the same tools
that they use today, typically the Athena UNIX olcr tools. CSS Consulting is
concerned about the impact that this new service will have on their workload,
and will be deeply involved in the definition, and development, of the answering
tools beginning this Fall.
Katie Livingston of ACS will remain the project leader through the development
and delivery of the "question-asking" tool.
The other project members are:
CSS: Carla Fermann, Susan B. Jones, and Debi Fuchs.
DCNS-development: Steve Neiterman.
Discussion related to this project can be directed to the macolxx@mit.edu
mailing list, which is archived to the macolxx discuss meeting on
