We're looking at a possible migration to Mac OS X next fall.
The OS is nice, stable and very usable. What I see as stumbling blocks
are:
1) synchonizing user accounts on lab and "open" computers across campus.
We're looking at an NIS authentication scheme (and that's the end of my
attempt to explain that which I do not fully understand. :) )
2) All necessary programs run under OS X. Photoshop's the flagship
holdout so far. Office is native, Star Office is supposed to be coming
along, mail, web browsing, messaging, etc all work.
3) Getting rid of the Classic environment.
I believe that OS X will be a capable replacement and an improvement
over Mac OS 9 and earlier. Lab restoration is another big hurdle, though
Apple's Software Restore utility works with OS X volumes.
Just some thoughts,
Pat
