I should have made this a little more clear...students at Pittsburg State
are a great group of people. They have a tendency to look-out for one
another in the halls. If they see something out of place, they find out what
is going on.
This attitude can be applied to the computing side as well. We run network
stats and see how much information a computer has sent out and how much has
come in. When we see HUGE amounts of outbound and nothing in, or HUGE
amounts both ways, we can usually tell that the kid does not even know that
they are serving out. Some do...but most do not even know what that "little
'M' in the corner is!" When we explain what they are doing, they USUALLY
stop. When we see huge amounts of inbound and nothing out...it is a
different story. Those users are more difficult to talk to.
We saw this as a problem that was not going to go away about two years ago
and added peer-to-peer programs to our contract. It is really difficult for
users to argue with something that is in bold type and underlined on the
contract that they signed. We update the contract at every printing to
include the newest programs.
For the most part, PSU is blessed with good-natured young people that seem
to really care about each other. It makes for a really good situation in
issues like these.
