We're in the process of considering PPPOE as an easy method for our ResNet
authentication. For a long time now we have been considering Netreg as an
authentication method, but we're concerned about how "insecure" (a student
could just manually plug in an IP from the pool if they knew the range)it
is. PPPOE in theory will allow us to authenticate each user every time they
connect and limit bandwidth consumption on a user by user basis (to prevent
the few abusive consumers that average 7mb/s from impacting their peers that
only use 10mb/sec every once in a while). We will also have a record of
which account was using a specific machine on a specific port with a
specific IP at a specified time so that tracking down abusive practices
(people serving out copyrighted material, attempting to hack systems, etc)
will be much easier to track.

Has anyone had experience in a residential networking environment with
PPPOE? The main problem I see is the client software - how to get client
software to every user that doesn't have windows XP or MacOS X (which have
PPPOE clients built in) and which PPPOE client to use. We're leaning towards
ENTERNET 300 as a possible client package (on both the mac and the PC). None
of the freeware clients that we have looked at were acceptable (any
suggetions?).
