Hi all,
One of our student consultants who does repair work for us has recently
noticed an interesting (and concerning) trend in regards to computers
brought in for repair. I will copy below his remarks about the problem.
All of the computers he refers to belong to students who live in the
dorms and are registered on our dorm network.
Please let us know if you have experienced similar issues or have any
suggestions.
Thanks!

>Hi guys,
> It appears that there may possibly be a new virus floating around. In
>the past week, I have received 5 computers that DO get ip addresses but
>no internet applications (TCP/IP) function. IE reacts as if there is
>no internet connection (ie: cannot find page errors, etc) while the
>most distinctive symptom of the problem is the error message First
>Class gives which is "Could not open a network socket."
> When two machines came in with this problem, I considered it a
>coincidence. When I came in to work the next day and we had 5 machines
>with this problem, I no longer see that as chance.
> On one hand, a clean install of windows (deleting the windows folder
>and reinstalling EVERY windows file) will fix this problem. On the
>other hand, this is a timely procedure and not a very good long time
>solution. I can reinstall Windows for every person that comes in but
>they can just as easily contract the virus, if it is a virus, again.
>IMPORTANT NOTE: All 5 machines that have been brought into the Help
>Center with this problem are running WINDOWS MILLENIUM.
