One thing that was obvious to me at the meeting Wednesday was that
most of the people in the room did not know their basic networking
options. Since several indicated that they are doing electrical
wiring this summer, they must decide what kind of wire to pull for a
network, if any, very soon. Perhaps a somewhat detailed description
of thinwire vs. twisted pair, and the pros and cons of each for
various-sized installations, would be a very good thing. I asked at
the meeting for Ron to sketch these, but he felt that that level of
technical detail was too much for that meeting. Presumably these
people will call DCNS and get one of the net people to visit their
house and discuss options, but I still think a lot of people would
benefit from a written-down version of the basic net assembly rules
(e.g., number of repeaters allowed, line length limits), typical
designs for rooms and whole houses, ballpark costs for key
components, and a discussion of pros and cons. This may be too big
for an FAQ, but someone needs to do it in some form (or spend a lot
longer delivering the information in seminars and repeatedly as the
questions arise).
