I'm interested to see if anyone has run across a study that found a correla=
tion between students who play video games and college retention. The gami=
ng community at WCU has grown and evolved and is now a very social practice=
. Our gaming club is one of the largest active clubs on campus and they ho=
ld frequent events that are widely attended. In speaking with students, ma=
ny of them have told me that the gaming community gives them social activit=
ies that keeps them happy which in turn encourages them to keep their grade=
s up and stay in school. I'm interested to see if there have been any stud=
ies that support or reject these types of statements. There have been seve=
ral studies linking gaming to drugs and poor relationships, but I'm interes=
ted in seeing if that has changed with the rise in popularity of network ga=
ming and gaming communities.
At WCU, we support low priority, best effort assistance for gaming. We typ=
ically provide the gaming club with a few enterprise switches for their eve=
nts given enough notice, and residential living paid for a server for stude=
nts to play on. We are subject to Blue Coat's definitions for bandwidth ma=
nagement, which occasionally misclassifies traffic. As far as wireless, if=
they can get a console online themselves that's fine. We won't support or=
modify the network architecture to accommodate consoles. This year we ha=
ve been trying out a new initiative where we work with RA's and RD's to put=
on game/movie nights in their residence hall. This stemmed from an initia=
tive where we put on informative presentations in the residence halls based=
on IT topics that students were interested in. The presentations were a s=
uccess for the first few years, but dwindled to very low attendance rates. =
Now we will put on a game/movie night where we bring ample projectors, spe=
akers, TV's, and other gear and set them up in the residence lobby. All we=
ask for is 10 to 15 minutes to talk about some requested IT topic, hand ou=
t surveys, field questions, or gather feedback and then the gaming/movie be=
gins. The semester is still young, so we'll see how this goes....
Any articles, studies, journals, or feedback you can send me would be great=
.
