We control all the dorms overall upload/download speeds via a Netequalizer =
- this allows everyone equal access, and prevents congestion, we don't limi=
t the individuals speed (rate based hard limit) but instead, limit them as =
a group (a bandwidth Pool). The advantage is- if bandwidth is available, t=
hey get blazing performance; if it's busy, they still get great performance=
; no one gets to hog it all....
We actually have a number of pools within our overall pipe, for example, I =
keep lab computers in their own pool (tightened down quite a bit) so no one=
can wander in to a lab and kick off massive downloads that would ordinaril=
y kill the big pipe. Public wireless is another tightly restricted pool - =
it's usable, but controlled. Another effective tool within the Netequalize=
r is Connection Limits - this really helps to keep things from getting out =
of hand, this feature has probably done more for us in controlling the grem=
lins than anything else. P2P seems to be almost non-existent on our network=
these days. I have recently noticed that Tumblr "browser extensions" seem=
to make a lot of connections simultaneously - connection limits help keep =
this under control too. Our network complaints to the support desk have dro=
pped to near zero...
There are many ways to skin the cat, but doing it fairly seems to be the be=
st solution for us.
Let me know if you have more questions.

Subject: upload and download speeds on the wireless network
Hi there!
I was wondering if anyone has policy in place to ratelimit their students u=
pload and download speeds when they are attached to the wireless network. =
If you do, what is it? :)
I'd like to put some in place and I'm curious what other schools are doing.
Thanks!
