Cool thanks to everyone. Papercut is still on my list to investigate.
Please keep the ideas coming.
Much appreciated.

Are you still talking about their jobs going through your print servers? If
so and the students have PCs the least amount of steps "I think" you can
narrow it down to is by doing the following...
1. Enabled the local "Guest" account on your Windows print server (since
the student machines are most likely not in your domain they will need the
guest account enabled to send the jobs over via Windows File and Print
Sharing.)
2. Speaking of Windows File and Print Sharing, make sure those firewall
ports are open on your Windows print server (most likely already are).
3. It's best if you can get like-printers across campus (example, all Xerox
Phasers or all HP Laserjet 4100's etc...) that will use the same driver,
that way once the student has the driver installed once they will no longer
need that step one the second/third/subsequent print queues they connect to=
,
4. Make sure you have both the Windows 32 bit and 64 bit drivers available
for your print queues (this can be a pain, I'd suggest setting up a 64 bit
windows 2008 print server and use a 32 bit Windows 7 machine to upload the
32 bit drivers using the print management tool. Note, to do this the
Windows 7 32-bit machine needs to have the same local Administrator
password as the print server, or, you can probably log in as the domain
admin on the 32 bit laptop to do it. There are a few other tricks to
getting the 32 bit drivers up there, if you run into issues shoot me an
email).
5. Share out the print queue(s)
6. On the student computer, all they need to do to connect to a print queue
and have it pull down the driver is go to "Start" -> "Run" and type in
\\printserver-name <file:///\\printserver-name>
and hit enter, once they see the queue they want they just double click on
it. If they do not have the proper driver for that queue it will ask if it
is okay to install it.
If you have Macs that you need to support you can either have them use
Windows File/Print Sharing (samba under the hood I believe) to connect to
your Windows print server, or, you can enable the LPR daemon on the Windows
print server (I think it is called Unix Printing under the options) and
have the Macs use the LPR protocol. The Macs will not receive the drivers
from the print server like the Windows clients will, they need the drivers
installed locally. There might be a Mac-print-server way of doing it
cleanly but I am not sure.... not a Mac user.
Hope this helps.

Hello All
I am looking for a zero config printing solution for my public printers.
So a student walks into a computer lab on campus with their personal laptop
and they wirelessly connect to the printer without installing any drivers
and print their document. Perhaps this is done via a website or an email
address? Anyone doing something like this?
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.
