We use GovConnection - www.govconnection.com - for a lot of our software p=
urchases, with the exception of OS and Office which we buy against the stat=

We just started this process as well.

The university does not provide software for any personal equipment (studen=
t, faculty, or staff). We do have a partnership with Varsity Buys http://va=
rsitybuys.com/ for discount software for personal equipment.

For university owned equipment, we have generic accounts setup for each dep=
artment with Apple IDs. There's a facilitator account and an installer acco=
unt. The idea is that they use the installer Apple ID to get the software d=
ownload. I'm not sure how this all operates in the backend at Apple (all I =
did was make the email accounts for the Apple IDs).

In a few cases we've done the redeem code option if a user already had a un=
iversity owned device with an Apple ID.

Chris,
That's an interesting idea we may look into, though it sounds like a huge h=
assle to manage...

Jack,
We have a similar policy, but with Apple VPP the software license is attach=
ed to their personal Apple ID. We can have them uninstall it, but that does=
n't give us the license back.

One of this issues I believe we're trying to deal with, though, is that if =
the user were to then leave the University we have no way to recoup that so=
ftware license.

For example, let's say we use the VPP to purchase a handful of Final Cut Pr=
o licenses ($299 each) for some of our marketing folks. If one of them leav=
es for another job the next month, they walk away with a $299 piece of soft=
ware that under traditional licensing we would keep. Is this just something=
we have to deal with? Am I missing a crucial part of the process somewhere=
?

Thanks for all the input!

"So, the answer to this is the Apple Volume Purchase Program (VPP): http:=

Right at this moment, I don't have time to lay out exactly how I'd architec=

Hope that helps.

Eric,

I have a favor to request of you.

We currently use a "techadmin" App Store/iTunes account to buy software fro=
m the App Store. We are trying to figure out how to buy that software throu=
gh the App Store so that it's not tied to our techadmin account (that way u=
sers can update their software when they need to) but also not tied to the =
user's account (so that we are not giving them free software that they can =
then re-download if they were to leave the university). Giving them the tec=
hadmin account password is obviously a bad idea. Also, if we download using=
the techadmin account, we are paying for one product license, which means =
downloading with the same account on a different machine does not charge us=
for another product license and thus putting us out of licensing complianc=
e, something we need to avoid. We have emailed our Apple Rep, but haven't h=
eard anything back yet. It was also suggested that we have you email the In=
stitutional Helpdesk...people--I'm not sure I'm getting the name right. We =
can't be the only university having this trouble.

So, would you please email whomever you need to to find out what other univ=
ersities are doing?

Thanks,
Keith
