Hi Libby,
We're required to hire first-year students sight-unseen, so our hiring is a
little funny. However, we've had good luck hiring students who indicate
experience *and/or interest* in the following areas:
1. There are check boxes on our application for interest in working in
customer service, with technology and for doing hands-on work. We look f=
or
at least a couple of these to be checked for each applicant in addition =
to
previous work experience.
2. Tutoring/teaching/helping experience (like summer camp workers,
tutors, students who have worked at retirement facilities)
3. Working with technology/AV equipment/productivity software
We generally don't have good luck when we hire students who explicitly
state that they want to work in ITS, but don't indicate either of the first
two above items. When we do hire them, they are generally not very good
with people, and they are often disappointed at the type of work they're
doing (T1/T2 tech support as opposed to server stuff or programming)
Honestly, most of the students we hire know nothing coming in, and we
expect them to learn as they go. Since our students are, for the most part,
a 4-year investment, we don't necessarily need them to know much coming in
(they have plenty of time to learn). We've invested a lot of time into
creating training materials and making sure new students get a lot of
hands-on experience--whether they want it or not--and we've developed a lot
of really great techs who came in with little/no experience.
We do hire a few returning students as needed to fill holes in our
coverage. Here's our (very short) job posting for our Level 1 (basically
trainee) position:

ob
Category*Information Technology Services *Job Description*1. Staff the ITS
Help Desk and work with campus community to record technology issues

3. Participate in job-related training during the year.
4. Other duties as assigned. *Job Requirements*1. Strong customer service
focus.
2. Previous use of MacOS and/or Windows operating systems.
3. Strong oral and written communication skills.
4. Attention to detail and punctuality.
5. Ability to work primarily daytime hours.
6. Experience with a variety of common productivity and utility software
preferred. *Available Openings* 4*Hours* 5.0 to 10.5 hours per week
