Bruce,

At a previous position (private, liberal arts school, ~2,000 students), there was a non-mandatory Gateway purchase program for several years with computers delivered to campus, imaged/prepped and then delivered to students upon arrival. With MPC's acquisition of Gateway, we moved to Lenovo with image/prep at CDWG and delivery to the students, taking significant labor off of our staff and expediting delivery. Shortly thereafter, price competition and Mac popularity increased to the point that it wasn't worth the work to create all of the custom image and other bits, so we backed off of a lot and just had a few recommended configurations through CDWG (Lenovo still) and Apple's education store, to provide guidance and some deals.

My personal opinion is that, unless there is a compelling need to standardize, there's a lot of work for little return on purchase programs, especially with the variety of prices and models now. Depending on how big your opt-out pool is and how much revenue you get from warranty and related services, I think it's worth a hard look at the work/hassle/simplicity/value balance for your staff and students.

Subject: [RESNET-L] Institutions that moved away from a required 1-to-1 laptop purchase

Greetings,

I'm writing to inquire if any of your organizations have a required 1-to-1 laptop purchase program, and especially if you have had one at one point, but have since backed away from it in some form, or are considering any significant mods to the arrangement.

We currently have a MacBook Pro laptop package requirement, whereby we
procure all of the components and re-sell to our entering class. We do have a
provision for students to opt out who already own a sufficient laptop, and not suprisingly are finding more and more students coming to the college already owning one.

Thanks in advance for any information;
Kind Regards,
~ Bruce
