Subject: Library Information Commons Layout Questions
We are currently evaluating the layout of service offerings in our Informat=
ion Commons and would like to see how others are setup and get any feedback=
that you would like to share.
Are IT Services and the Library one organization or separate entities?
Separate: ITS is a division on its own and Library is in Ac=
ademic Affairs
Do you have an information commons in your library?
Yes (three libraries)
Do you have an IT Help Desk in the Information Commons?
Yes, but limited. We have student ITS staff at a desk to ha=
ndle computer lab support (log on, software use, printing, toner, etc.), wi=
reless setup/troubleshooting, e-mail setup, and other general questions tha=
t arise. If needed, they refer customers to our main location with professi=
onal staff.
Where is your IT Help Desk located in relation to other service desks like =
the Library reference and circulation desks? For example are the combined?=
Do students first see the IT help desk or the a library service desk like =
reference or circulation? Etc.
The ITS desks in the libraries are attached to Reference, s=
o the same big desk with multiple stations at it of different service. Thes=
e are near the lab areas, but Circulation is the first sight on entry, but =
none is too far apart.
What other IT related services do you offer in your information commons?
Nothing further by ITS, though there are some specialized s=
tations run by Library staff (searching catalogs, viewing media, video edit=
ing, scanning).
Are these other services co-located with your help desk or are they separat=
e service areas?
Do you offer IT application software training and tutoring services? If so,=
where are these located?
Yes. Training workshops are in a classroom near our main He=
lpDesk or in offices around campus if arranged.
