We too are eager to explore the AirGroup capability when the time comes. We
are using Aruba and for now, our short term solution has been to create an
additional SSID broadcast from our access points specifically for AirPlay
functionality. The AppleTVs are registered on that network manually and
anyone else is required to enter Faculty/Staff credentials upon connection
to receive a limited time access to that network. All devices on that SSID
are then routed to the same subnet. This setup prevents people from camping
on the AirPlay SSID while still providing the network setup needed for
AirPlay functionality.
That said, this is not a long-term solution by any means, but works until
you start rolling out massive numbers of AppleTVs. We currently only have
it set up in a small handful of classrooms and conference rooms. We even
have only enabled the AirPlay SSID on access points around those classrooms
and conference rooms.
Even with the AirGrouping, there will be some challenges with large scale
deployment of AppleTVs, but it will at least be a start.
