Hey Bob,
*/"What are some of the items that will not copy over?"/* - That's a
good question, by looking at what Domain Group Policies I had to create
here is a list of items I think wouldn't come over with the copy
- Internet Explorer checking to see if it is the default browser
- Office 2010 putting you through the new user prompts
- The desktop background image
- Turn off the Customer Experience Improvement Program
- Inactivity time out, we use some group policies to set the
inactivity time out and have it call a freeware screen saver named
AutoLogoff.scr from this site
http://www.squiggle.org/2010/05/autologoffscreensaver/ that logs you out
of Windows.... works great
- Windows Media Player first use screens
*/"What do you do for network printers?"/* - We log into the local
"setup" account that I mentioned (you are right, it is located under
"Local Users and Groups") and we map the network printers inside that
account and when we use defprof to copy over the "setup" user's profile
over to the default user the mapped printers DO come over which is nice.
One issue we ran into is the default printer might not be set correctly.
To get around this we created a batch script with the following in it
wmic printer where name='\\\\our_print_server\\our_print_share_name'
call setdefaultprinter
Notice that you have to escape the blackslashes in the UNC with
backslashes so you get four at the beginning and 2 before the share name.
and we put this batch script it inside of this folder
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
which is the equivalent to the "All Users" startup folder from Windows
XP so when anyone logs into the computer it gets triggered and sets the
default printer.... ugly but it works :-)
