In areas where wireless coverage is lacking, we allow students to bring in their own access points to provide coverage - under the stipulation that they need to bring the WAP to our help desk to have it secured and so we can go over our acceptable use policy with the student.

Once we transition over to all Cisco devices, we should have complete coverage in all areas of the ResHalls and would not allow any personal access points unless verified wireless coverage is poor.

Our unsecure wireless (Meru) coverage in residential spaces is primarily limited to common areas, so we allow and provide support for student-owned WAPs. Although we recommend specific "access points", most students bring in routers, which we don't allow.

Fortunately our NAC does a good job identifying NAT devices on the network and blocks them accordingly. When a student can't get his router to work, he brings it to our help desk where we show him how to set it up to work as an access point (i.e. to not hand out IP addresses).
