If you download Backtrack linux <http://www.backtrack-linux.org/>, it
contains all of the aircrack <http://www.aircrack-ng.org> tools.
airodump-ng itself is very easy to use but requires one of a few network
cards<http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=3Dcompatible_cards&DokuWiki=3D=
891a39c1f970b9e12b5459c28a90181a>(not
all cards are capable of going into listen mode). As Melisa stated,
you can then use a MAC identifier <http://www.coffer.com/mac_find/> to
determine manufacturers. Certain OEMs will use specific NIC chips (Apple
will be their own and Linksys/Cisco will be their own etc). One thing to
note is that the network must have some activity in order to pick up the
MAC. The airodump-ng tool will also tell you the SSID of networks out there
or hidden if the SSID is hidden.
