ResNet 2012 is coming up - last one before the end of the world!!! It just
may be the last chance you have to impart your knowledge to the rest of us
before the world ends on December 21, 2012 . . .
:D
Disclaimer - I'm NOT doing the call for presentations. This is just me
thinkin about stuff and talkin about stuff. . . which I do. Sometimes. :D
Okay, so yes it can be intimidating! You get up in front of a bunch of
people and talk about something and everyone looks at you . . .
Well, not necessarily!
A: it doesn't have to be alone! There are PANEL presentations, which are a
ton of fun. These allow you to work with several other people and you can
lean on them quite a bit!
B: It can be interactive! Discussion presentations are much more back and
forth - they're a discussion in which people can ask questions and you can
answer. This may be a perfect alternative if you aren't sure what to say, or
if you don't think you can actually talk for an hour (trust me, you probably
can! :D )
C: there are BoF's (Birds of a Feather) where all you really do is just
guide the conversation. You don't actually have to KNOW anything!!! Imagine
that!!!
But, what if you don't have anything to say?
Yeah, I hear that one all the time! Trust me, we all have SOMETHING to day;
we just typically are either too reserved to let it out (and use our time
behind the lawnmower to talk and talk and talk) or don't know how to get
started. That's fine - there's help for both - and neither is wrong. We just
have to get you past those blocks - your knowledge is valuable and we, your
cohorts, want to improve our lives with it. We can help! There are many of
us who you can't get to shut up (ummmm, like yours truly) and others who
have overcome those blocks (I can name names. . . muahahaaaa) so there are
people who can and want to help!
So, what do you talk about?
Oh, that's the fun part! Anything! Seriously - what do you tend to talk
about with your co-workers? With your students? Are you a hardware geek? You
may have some insights into our choices of hardware - it IS a pain to
balance hardware, costs, and a four-year purchasing cycle. . . how do you
keep your students happy with four year old hardware? You may have some
insights, or even want to get on a soapbox, about the non-upgradeable or
non-"fiddle-able" hardware that seems to be taking over our industry. . .
hate it? Love it? How do you deal with it?
Have you figured out a great way to deal with student issues? Have you
mastered the carrot/stick paradigm? Think it's archaic and antiquated and
you're using an 8-ball instead? Expound!
Are you involved with pedagogy? Are you asking yourself, "What the heck does
a foot have to do with learning?" (in which case, we can talk about some
Greek derivatives) Are your faculty doing cool things with Smartboards or
even better, doing Smart-board-like things WITHOUT a Smartboard? Flexibile
solutions are awesome! What are you doing?
How are you planning for the future? ARE you planning for the future? Yes,
oftentimes we're so encumbered with just staying afloat. . . how do you deal
with it? How are you working your hardware rotations? Have you found a cool
way to streamline it? Want to guide a discussion with a bunch of others
about it?
What about tools. . . ugh ugh ugh. . .tools cool! Yes - I admit it, I'm a
tool geek. I've got the kit from iFixIt and it doesn't leave my SIGHT. . .
all those pretty tri-wing drivers. . . oh yes. Do you have a cool setup?
Have you found a cool way to deal with pulling data from hard drives before
you tell students to cry? (heh heh - no, I'm not that cruel, really)
Listen, (or read - if you can actually hear me, you have other issues. . .)
there's plenty of time to start thinking about presentation ideas! This is
NOT a call for presentations. . . yet.
Instead, this is a call for ponderation . . . begin those brain-gears
a-movin. Post some ideas on the list-serve and get some feedback. Heck,
we'll all help! Maybe you'll find a couple of people to join you in a panel
- that's how I met Jim Rizzo and I only have a few regrets about that (just
kidding, Jim! :D )
It would be WONDERFUL if we had a bajillion submissions (that's a technical
term. . .) this year!
So start thinkin! That smell will be your brain-gears grinding! Remember,
the world ends 6 months after this year's ResNet so if you're gonna say it,
say it now! :D
