I did try adding that IP address to my host file already (see bottom of my =
original message), and that didn't work. The two IPs I've tried are 74.208=
.10.249 and 74.208.105.171.

LOL! How dare you try to downgrade from the best. iOS. Ever.
Add this line to your hosts file and then it should work using your own IPS=
W (it basically points Apple's domain to a server that will allow it).
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
You can remove that line when you're done. I've done this. It works.

Subject: [RESNET-L] downgrading back to ios 4.3.5
I upgraded my iPod touch 3rd generation to ios 5, and it's killing the perf=
ormance and battery life. I want to downgrade back to 4.3.5, but everythin=
g I've tried has failed. I've searched all around with Google and YouTube =
and I have the correct IPSW file for my device (iPod3,1_4.3.5_8L1_Restore.i=
psw) and have used the Option-Click on Restore in iTunes to try and restore=
back to that firmware, but continually get blocked by Apple, as it indicat=
es "device isn't eligible" for this build during the "verifying with Apple"=
phase. I've even modified my hosts file to point to "alternative" IP path=
s to gs.apple.com, and it still doesn't work. Has anyone successfully down=
graded their iThingy back to pre-ios5?
