Depending on the status of the machines (are they the property of the University or the student?) you may want to check with Microsoft on whether you could install Microsoft Security Essentials on them for free.
If the laptops remain University equipment, Microsoft Forefront might still be a cheap(er) option -- depending on your institution's Campus Agreement (or whatever they changed the name of the program to...).

Here is an off-the-wall idea from the imagination of someone not quite fully caffeinated on a Friday morning...
Take the hint from all of the hardware companies.
What if you made an agreement with some AV vendor to put a 9 month demo on student computers - and they would compensate you to do it.

Good morning!
We recently had a license change and we no longer have a license for an antivirus/antimalware program to put on our laptop program machines - we sell them with a prepared Bucknell image, and if they need to be reimaged here at our desk, we put an updated image on them.
I know a lot of schools simply point their students to online installers for various free programs, but we're looking to license a product that we can install on student computers.
I'd like to hear from schools about what programs they're using and how much they might cost. Thanks -
