Hi Ken & All,

My understanding is best practice today is to issue /48 to downstream custo=
mers. At UNH we have many local customers, in the sense that they run thei=
r own networks. A few of our local customers would be CS, Physics, Enterpr=
ise Computing, Dining and Facilities to name a few. Our vision is that all=
of these customers will receive /48 assignments where they will most likel=
y build out /64 networks. Then we have a fair number of off campus sites a=
nd customers that will get /48s.

Today we could most likely do all this with a /48 but I believe it would at=
some point get complicated to manage and perhaps maintain reasonable routi=
ng tables.

I am sure for each institution it is going to be personal need and potentia=
l growth of networks and services each is planning to provide over the comi=
ng years.

When I spoke with ARIN it seemed that if you needed anything more than a /4=
8 it was recommended to get the /32. Otherwise we would have looked into g=
etting an assignment in between the two extremes.

Hope this helps. At any rate I think this is a good topic and the more inp=
ut of what others are doing should help us all.

Thank you,
Scott K

Ken,

An IPv6 /48 network isn't really equivalent to an IPv4 class B. In a /48, =
you will have 65,536 /64 subnets, each of which is theoretically capable of=
hosting every computer ever made (EUI-64 addressing). Here at WCU we've b=
een allocated a /48 from our ISP, which I believe is true for all of the UN=
C schools.

  Scott,
I've been pondering getting into the IPv6 world but don't
have a real need at the present time. I've been reading where
there's no time like the present to do this but I'm just not
sure of where it will take us at the present time. But any
way if one was to go and do this I would think that the /48
would give one enough address space to work with. After all
it seems that it's equivalent to a ipv4 class B which for Keene
would be just fine. Unless I'm all wet and there's more to it
than I understand. Am I comparing apples to apples or is it
          apples to cumquats ....

Hello Tony,

The University of new Hampshire acquired a /48 a couple years ago as that =
is what ARIN was offering. Since then ARIN policy has changed and they are=
more inclined to issue /32s to higher Ed if you can make a case as a LIR (=
local Internet Registry). We are currently in the process of transitioning=
to a /32. Some general items that may qualify your college is if your ins=
titution has customers outside the college, like k-12 schools, libraries, n=
on-profits, remote sites (research sites) or possibly even separate departm=
ents like CS, Electrical Eng., Physics or others.

In general we plan to assign /48s to different groups at UNH such as CS, RC=
C (Research Computing), UNH-IOL (interoperability Lab), Cooperative Extensi=
on, distance learning, WIFI networks, and others.

I did a little research and other universities of the size and character of=
UNH all have /32s. It may seem like overkill and probably is but it seems =
to be the standard for institutions like UNH. The more research I did the=
more convinced I became that a /48 would at some point limit or capabiliti=
es. As a final check, I asked industry leader in IPv6 testing and certific=
ation, UNH IOL (www.iol.unh.edu<http://www.iol.unh.edu>) , what they though=
t and they confirmed that a /32 is the norm for our type of scenario.

We have around 12k undergrads and act as an ISP for various groups around t=
he state. The /32 should give us the opportunity provide IPv6 services lim=
ited only by imagination.

I hope this is some help. Let me know if you have further questions.

You can easily get a /48 - that's what we got. My understanding is that is =
what most folks will get. If you can make a good case you might be able to =
get something slightly larger (like a /46).

A /48 should be plenty big...

I know that a /32 is about the size recommended for an ISP (which I think a=
University is) but I sure would like to see what other universities are p=

I've got an IPv4 "B" block now and with about 5000 students it gives=

The /32 would get me 79 septillion IP addresses...seems like enough ;-)... =
but what's the going reservation size you have or are contemplating?
