We have Pharos here and we have two different printing options available
for the students:
"Dominican Printing" - This is a queue they can install that holds the
jobs and allows them to pickup at one of eight Canon iMFPs around
campus. The jobs are held for 12 hours. If they do not release them
before that time, the system purges them and the user is not charged.
"Resident Printing" - This is a new queue I am getting ready for the
fall. There will be a smaller HP Laser and release station in a common
lounge near the main entrance to the res halls. It has the same features
as the above queue. I went with a separate queue for two reasons:
1. Drivers - Since one is Canon devices and one is HP, you need
them separate unless you use a generic driver and then you lose advanced
functions (duplex, etc)
2. 24 Hour Access - The residents have been asking for a place
they can print to with 24/7 access. None of our labs are open later than
midnight weekdays so putting a printer they can use in the res
hall space made since. Also, the space we choose is staff 24/7 but a
resident assistant so the printer and equipment will be in sight of
someone at all times.
We're a much smaller school than most on the list; only about 3,700
total students counting both grad and undergrad; with a majority being
commuters.
I'd be happy to answer any Pharos questions I can.

Subject: student-owned laptop printing
Greetings to all -
We are in the midst of deploying Papercut as a new "pay for print"
system. We've had our own system in place for about 12 years, and it
served us well but has shown its age. And now the major requirement for
Papercut is to support "student-owned laptop printing", where they can
print from their own machines.
We chose Papercut, and so far I love the flexibility it offers. Now I am
at the choice of WHICH printers I have the students install on their
machines. We want to make the install process as easy as possible, thus
are CONSIDERING developing our own installer for configuring an IPP
connection and installing the Papercut client. Novell's iPrint will be
the back-end server, but we cannot use the iPrint client to deliver
drivers on student laptops.
For those of you who have student-owned laptop printing, have any of you
written your own installer to make the process easier? Any pitfalls
along the way?
Thanks LOADS for anything you can pass along.
