I use a nametag that is common across several of my student divisions. My
ResTechs (RTAs) both have a t-shirt provided by the DoS that has a common
design with the Sponsors, the RAs, and other official people during New
Student Orientation - just an athletic style shirt with "RTA" in the middle
and it's green (while Sponsors are burgundy, RAs are something else, etc.) -
it really helps parents and new students. . .just look for the green shirt. :D
They are also required to wear their nametag for the first week of service
in the dorms. Our dorms are fairly small (about 70, average) so after that
week their residents tend to know who they are so the nametags are more
optional.
The Lab Technology Assistants (LTAs) are required to wear their nametags
when they are on duty. This lets me and students know who is on duty. . .
and by the same token it gives off-duty LTAs the ability to say that they
are NOT on duty so they can get their own work done.
I just use MSPub to whip them out real quick - it is a design that changes a
bit from year to year but is pretty consistent. I also put a bar code across
the bottom edge that spells their name - just for kicks. :D We have a hot
laminator and I use luggage tags - they're a good size and they fit the
lanyards nicely.
I found that I get better compliance (without beating it into their heads,
and esp after hours when I have a harder time seeing if they actually DO
wear them) if the nametag looks good.
