. How many student workers Information Technology at your
institution employs?

Honestly not sure on exact number but at least 80

. What is the size of your school?

Our Fall 2010 numbers:
Worldwide Graduate = 21,091
Worldwide Undergraduate = 4,895
Just St. Louis Graduate = 3,380
Just St. Louis Undergraduate = 4,719

. What incentives exist for your student workers in terms of
promotions?

Unfortunately, not really much of anything at this time. All of our Help
Desk Assistants (and ResTech Consultants) are on the same tier. We do have
one part-time weekend shift leader position that we typically will fill with
a Help Desk Assistant who is the most qualified and who of course would be
interested in the position.

. What is the salary structure for your student employees?

We write up the job description and our Career Services department will
classify them to a certain pay grade level. Almost all of IT positions are
classified as Level 3 which has a starting pay of $9.00 per hour.

. If there is a standard campus salary at your institution? If there
is, what is it?

See above. Career Services classified student employment positions at
certain levels (goes from Level 1 to Level 4)

. What other benefits and perks do your students receive by working
with you?

Job experience mostly. Help Desk is one of the most difficult positions on
campus and one with the most responsibility so we always try to spin it as
this job will give them a ton of great experience that will look even better
on a resume when they go out into the real world. Because of that level of
responsibility, we do make it clear that we treat this as a real job rather
than the perception that it's "Just a work study position." We will also do
Student Employee of the Year and they'll get a plaque hung up in the
department and some candy/snacks. We also make a big deal out of the
national student employee appreciation week and have lots and lots of food
and games too.

Subject: Student Technology Staffing

Apologize in advance for any cross postings...the following is sent on
behalf of one of my staff who is looking for information from other
institutions regarding IT student Staffing. Any information that you can
provide us regarding your student programs would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Bill Thieke

Hello,

I am trying to conduct an informal survey about students that work for
Information Technology in higher education institutions. We have been trying
to restructure our program for a number of years. We have around 25 students
that provide classroom support and staff the service desk serving faculty,
staff, and students. Currently, our program provides almost no room for
advancement; all students enter at the same level (minimum wage) and stay at
the same level throughout their time with us. We have the added barrier of
not being able to pay our student workers at a higher rate than other
work-study positions on campus. Essentially our students are required to
perform more advanced tasks and require significantly more training than
most other positions on campus but they make the same amount of money as the
person checking ID cards at the gym. We are trying to collect information
from other institutions in order to build a proposal for restructuring our
program and potentially presenting our case to the student wage committee.

The information that we are interested in gathering would be:

. How many student workers Information Technology at your
institution employs?

. What is the size of your school?

. What incentives exist for your student workers in terms of
promotions?

. What is the salary structure for your student employees?

. If there is a standard campus salary at your institution? If there
is, what is it?

. What other benefits and perks do your students receive by working
with you?

We would really appreciate any information that you are willing to provide
us with. Our students have great potential, but they as well as we are left
frustrated by our inability to provide them with continuing incentives to
grow as employees. A majority of our students do not major in technical
areas so many of them will not continue in the technology field. We feel as
though we need to provide some incentive to keep them interested in working
for us.

Thank you,
