* I have about 20 students that staff the student help desk. Our f=
ield support unit which supports Faculty & Staff have about 5-6 student emp=
loyees and there are a few students here and there in other departments.
* 21000+ students
* In my area, students must complete proficiency tests to receive r=
aises. Upon successful completion of three tests, we give $1 raise for the=
first semester and $0.50 for each additional semester (which also have pro=
ficiency tests). We also have a student manager position which gives the s=
tudent a $1 raise.
* We start at a minimum of $8.25/hr, but will go higher if the stud=
ent has prior experience in technical support.
* If you go to our Student Employee Handbook<http://www.towson.edu/=

standard salaries.
* Flexibility in scheduling, and a good reference for getting that =

o I treat FWS students much the same way as regular students and if they =
go over their allotted amount, the department automatically picks up the bi=

o If the student meets academic requirements, they may work over 20 hours=
per week. I started doing this shortly after I took this position because=
I quickly found out that just about all of my students had second jobs and=
it would be more convenient for them to work more hours for me.
o I have found that the students I hire are mostly motivated by challenge=

Hello,
I am trying to conduct an informal survey about students that work for Info=
rmation Technology in higher education institutions. We have been trying to=
restructure our program for a number of years. We have around 25 students =
that provide classroom support and staff the service desk serving faculty, =
staff, and students. Currently, our program provides almost no room for ad=
vancement; all students enter at the same level (minimum wage) and stay at =
the same level throughout their time with us. We have the added barrier of =
not being able to pay our student workers at a higher rate than other work-=
study positions on campus. Essentially our students are required to perfor=
m more advanced tasks and require significantly more training than most oth=
er positions on campus but they make the same amount of money as the person=
checking ID cards at the gym. We are trying to collect information from ot=
her institutions in order to build a proposal for restructuring our program=
and potentially presenting our case to the student wage committee.
The information that we are interested in gathering would be:
* How many student workers Information Technology at your instituti=
on employs?
* What is the size of your school?
* What incentives exist for your student workers in terms of promot=
ions?
* What is the salary structure for your student employees?
* If there is a standard campus salary at your institution? If ther=
e is, what is it?
* What other benefits and perks do your students receive by working=
with you?
We would really appreciate any information that you are willing to provide =
us with. Our students have great potential, but they as well as we are left=
frustrated by our inability to provide them with continuing incentives to =
grow as employees. A majority of our students do not major in technical are=
as so many of them will not continue in the technology field. We feel as th=
ough we need to provide some incentive to keep them interested in working f=
or us.
Thank you,
