Hi,
I'd second Kevin's point about the Core Data Service -- you can get really =
good institutional comparisons out of that.
Hello,
I am trying to conduct an informal survey about students that work for Info=
rmation Technology in higher education institutions. We have been trying to=
restructure our program for a number of years. We have around 25 students =
that provide classroom support and staff the service desk serving faculty, =
staff, and students. Currently, our program provides almost no room for ad=
vancement; all students enter at the same level (minimum wage) and stay at =
the same level throughout their time with us. We have the added barrier of =
not being able to pay our student workers at a higher rate than other work-=
study positions on campus. Essentially our students are required to perfor=
m more advanced tasks and require significantly more training than most oth=
er positions on campus but they make the same amount of money as the person=
checking ID cards at the gym. We are trying to collect information from ot=
her institutions in order to build a proposal for restructuring our program=
and potentially presenting our case to the student wage committee.
The information that we are interested in gathering would be:
* How many student workers Information Technology at your instituti=
on employs?
~60 students in central IT
* What is the size of your school?
~15,000 undergraduates and grad students
* What incentives exist for your student workers in terms of promot=
ions?
We run a student manager program in several of our areas that provides a gr=
eat career path and motivation for our outstanding staff to keep growing. I=
presented at Resnet 2010 on developing a student manager program, and woul=
d be happy to discuss further with you if you are interested.
* What is the salary structure for your student employees?
Our students start at $10 an hour and get a 15 cent raise for each semester=
they work for us. Promotion to student manager earns a $1 on top of their =
current salary (so a kid making $10.30 would jump to $11.45 when they were =
promoted the next semester.)
* If there is a standard campus salary at your institution? If ther=
e is, what is it?
Our work-study office gives guidance for wages for two types of jobs - Stud=
ent general and Student Advanced. Our job is Student Advanced and they give=
a wage range of $9.50 - $17 (this just got bumped up for the next year.) W=
e last did a wage floor increase in 2009-2010.
* What other benefits and perks do your students receive by working=
with you?
Well, work experience is a good incentive, they also get to work in "cool" =
places like the Link (http://link.duke.edu) and the Multimedia Studio (site=
s.duke.edu/oit-mps<http://sites.duke.edu/oit-mps>). We have an engineering =
school, so we do have a good population of students interested in tech jobs=
, but I also have a good chunk of students who aren't engineers. I've had a=
lot of success in attracting a diverse applicant pool by emphasizing how t=
he training we provide can help them in the job market. If a student is get=
ting a liberal arts major that doesn't have an easy-to-sell career path, ha=
ving some tech experience can be a great thing in their pocket when they ar=
e searching for that first entry-level gig. (It can also make Mom & Dad fee=
l better too.)
Good luck - and definitely get on the Resnet list, we all have lots of opin=
ions on these things! :-)
Best,
Erin Nettifee

work experience is a good incentive, they also get to work in "cool&qu=
ot; places like the Link (<a href=3D"http://link.duke.edu">http://link.duke=
.edu</a>) and the Multimedia Studio (<a href=3D"http://sites.duke.edu/oit-m=

We have an engineering school, so we do have a good population of students=
interested in tech jobs, but I also have a good chunk of students who aren=
't engineers. I've had a lot of success in attracting a diverse applicant p=
ool by emphasizing how the training
we provide can help them in the job market. If a student is getting a libe=
ral arts major that doesn't have an easy-to-sell career path, having some t=
ech experience can be a great thing in their pocket when they are searching=
for that first entry-level gig.
(It can also make Mom & Dad feel better too.)</div>
