We really didn't want to get into the whole "I'm sharing my own original
music" or "how will I get the latest Linux distro" debate, but the
volume of DMCA complaints were certainly growing and taking significant
staff time in response.
Oberlin now blocks P2P traffic by default, but we will permit P2P
traffic to your computer upon request, no questions asked, until the end
of the academic year or upon receipt of a DMCA complaint for that
system, whichever comes first ;-)
I was surprised how few exemption requests we actually received this
year. Many Linux distos are also available by traditional download
procedures (who knew?), and our Packetlogic is able to distinguish many
game updates from file-sharing torrents, permitting games but not the
rest. Not perfect, but pretty good.
The exemption request system presents yet another opportunity for a
teachable moment...
