Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. I've contacted a few
resellers and will see where the chips fall. If anyone's looking for an
alternative to the standard boot I've found two types that I like. One
has been referred to as a slim-line boot and the other may be a
Tripp-Lite centric design called snagless. Each avoids the issue of the
rubberized boot hardening up and becoming difficult to manipulate. They
also come with a convenient price premium over their standard booted
cousins.
