Jeremy:

Two questions:

a) Why did you launch without WPA/WPA2?

b) You write, " It's a difficult balance of budgeting for service
supplied, and the demand. Some think that they should have the speeds FIOS,
cable routers, and high speed DSL give them at home. Our service for the
students is a fraction of the monthly cost of these other services even
though we have added bandwidth and installed N based AP's." As you wrote,
schools spend a fraction per student of what the per person cost would be
for broadband at home. What precludes a school from providing equivalent or
better broadband speeds than their home?

Subject: Re: issues in wireless Only rooms

We're a wired and wireless deployment as well. This is the first year we
have had full coverage of Aruba AP105's in all halls. We've been a wired
port per pillow rollout for many years now. Like Pete, I can answer where I
can.

1. Most support issues have been user error during signup to our home
grown registration system, or basic connection setup of their wireless from
being used at home. We had some issues having both wired and wireless
available in the buildings. We configured DHCP Snooping to stop personal
wireless routers from sending DHCP addresses when plugged in backwards, as
some areas are allowed wireless routers (Family Housing). Rogue access
points are identified and removed from the network. The most frustrating
issue we fought was laptops or other devices plugged into a network port
while still connected to the wireless. A network bridge occurred at times,
causing havoc in the building and problems with our captive portals.
Finally, after many calls to Aruba about the issue with no fix or
workaround, I configured Port Security to allow only 1 mac address at a
time. This put the port in an err-disable mode, disabling the port
activity. The ability to age out the disabled port after a time (30 minutes
currently) made administration easier since it allows connection resets
without a manual process. This connection is only reset if the port was
disabled due to multiple mac addresses detected from switch/hub use or
network bridging. Other reasons like fast link cycling or spanning tree
doesn't reset the connection, so we are informed about the trouble and can
investigate. Call volume is increased towards the beginning of each
semester until users are informed to turn off the wireless connection before
connecting to the wired port. Switches/hubs aren't allowed to be connected
so this solved multiple issues for us.

There have been the occasional problems with users being redirected to an AP
further away than an AP much closer, giving that user horrible signal
strength. We have a couple areas that need better coverage. This is all
part of tuning the system more, and changing the AP's from automatic signal
power to manual settings to boost the few areas that aren't covered very
well. A couple of AP's might be deployed after tuning efforts show a
possible need. Overall coverage is good, even with the brick/cinderblock
construction.

We left the wireless open with no encryption, and our home
grown wired/wireless registration system has worked well. Our connections
use captive portals authenticated through a RADIUS server at
central IT, mirrored from the University AD. This made password problems or
changes at the AD controlled by central IT. It is easier to have
centralized management of accounts since they use the same
credentials everywhere.

Some devices can't connect to the wireless due to not having
a web browser to connect to the captive portal. Once a wired port is
registered, it stays active without the need to authenticate when
used. They are directed to use the wired port for streaming media, gaming,
etc. after registering with a capable device. Students are warned during
the process that the wireless is an open system, and for more
secure access, to use the wired port. Open wireless has security concerns,
but for our first year we wanted as many devices to function as possible
without multiple SSID's to setup and troubleshoot.

Wired support issues are usually bad jacks or some problem
causing the port to disable. All are easy fixes and don't take much time to
support. We don't have plans to scale back our port count. Remote
registration saves time the administrating physical connections, constant
changes, and documentation. Once a user registers for a network port, they
are responsible for all usage of that port.

2. Devices without web browsers would be an issue if we went wireless
only in a building. We'd have to come up with a different business model
for administration, and a lot of devices only have a network port instead of
wireless options.

3. Currently, port usage averages about 50%. With streaming media,
and the addition of multiple devices per user becoming more prevalent, the
students use anything available to them. IP management was tricky at first
to get the DHCP lease length set. I believe this is the beginning of the
storm as we all see increases in consumption from streaming media, multiple
device use at the same time, and the next unknown technology will keep us
all on our toes. Even wireless vendors have started to work around device
specific issues like iPads and iTouch products. Gaming, desktops, and
secure transactions are all suggested using the wired port at this time. I
believe this is the beginning of the storm, as we see increases in bandwidth
consumption from streaming media, multiple device use at the same time, and
the next unknown technology. It's a difficult balance of budgeting for
service supplied, and the demand. Some think that they should have the
speeds FIOS, cable routers, and high speed DSL give them at home. Our
service for the students is a fraction of the monthly cost of these other
services even though we have added bandwidth and installed N based AP's.

We don't have any wireless only because we already had decent wired in the
dorms, so we just left it running.

I can answer some of the questions though.

1. It is rare for us to have a wired support issue. We also find that
wireless in general, is much harder to support than wired due to the fact
that clients don't always behave (mostly apple devices) drivers are often
not updated, and there are issues with interference from rogue devices. We
have gotten very good at tracking down rogues and getting them removed, but
it is extra support.

2. N/A

3. We have found that only about 15-20% of the ports are used in wired
and wireless rooms. The biggest issue are things like PS3's, Tivo's, Rokus',
Flat screen TV's and BlueRay players that now come with Ethernet connection
and the list goes on and on. The problem is that we use 802.1x and none of
these devices support it so we just tell people to plug in. I think there
are probably some gamers who want every possible edge in latency who also
plug in their computers. The other issue you will run into is wireless
printers. If you haven't had wireless there before, then you might not have
noticed but must printers now seem to come with WiFi and not one of them
supports 802.1x. During opening last fall we just bought a couple of hundred
long usb cables for about 2.00 a piece and gave them to people who had a
problem with that.

Subject: issues in wireless Only rooms

Hi,

Since wireless is the hot topic of the week.

We still have many buildings have wired connection only. But from this
coming August, we will provide wireless connection only in student rooms
due to the aging switches and the replacement cost will be too high on top
of the wireless installation. We plan to install only a handful of
switches, so users will have to request it and let us know why they need a
wired connection.

To prepare ahead, I would like to know:

1. Do you have more wireless support issues than wired issues at the
beginning of the semester?

2. If you only provide wireless, what kind of common issues do you
encounter? Do users complain about no ethernet ports?

2. If you still have both wired and wireless in rooms, please let me know
why users won't use wireless and the percentage of devices on wired ports.
Are they connected to ethernet only because their desktop or consoles don't
have the wireless built-in or because of other reasons such as speed and
reliability?

Thank you all in advance.

Wendy
