Cheryl,
We're small - 1100 total students. We moved from a 45 Mbps connection in the fall term to a 100 Mbps connection for the Spring term. At 45 Mbps, the graph was pegged constantly. At 100 Mbps, we see some peaks and valleys (more peaks, of course).
When we moved from 45 Mbps to 100 Mbps we also eliminated our dedicated shaper, which was a Procera device. Last summer, we replaced two old firewalls with a pair of SonicWall E5500 devices. They have been rock solid and actually include some shaping capability which has been enhanced in the latest software release. Frankly, it was getting really expensive to upgrade a shaper license every time we also needed to add additional bandwidth. This gives us "good enough" shaping and the funds can be redirected to new bandwidth needs.
So, the short answer to your first question: Yes. :-)

Subject: Bandwidth Concerns
Hi:
Just wondering if anyone else is seeing HUGE increases in bandwidth consumption from the fall term until now. Any strategies you're using to address the issue? We're swamped!
