Off line, I sent Sandy some suggestions re: adding twitter followers. Made me think about some other things about tweeting. . . .

Look at these two tweets that communicate similar information.

Mine (not as good example) from @UDelCOTW
itworld.com reports US researchers discover your car can be hacked w/ trojan coming in via mp3 file: http://www.udel.edu/00616

Brian Rue's (better example) from @FSU_IT_Security
Great, now I have to worry about malware infected MP3s breaching my car's computer control system. http://mcaf.ee/3e24f

Because I'm old, and tweeting about IT Security issues, I think my tweets tend to be too academic--worrying about communicating attribution to where I've found information + communicating the information. Note that Brian's tweet focuses on "hooking" the audience and providing the information. Methinks that's the better way to go for this kind of tweeting--the audience is going to see where the info came from if they follow the link. I can always thank the person off-line with a direct message or a reply.

Note that both @FSU_IT_Security and @UDelCOTW try to communicate that someone has checked out the shortened link. Instead of just using something like bit.ly, Brian's links are shared through the McAfee link shortener, and I tend to use the one we developed at UD. No guarantees, of course, but if you can subtly communicate that someone has checked the link you're sharing, that should help make people feel better about following the shortened link. . . .
