Hey Joel,

We use a homegrown online tutorial and quiz for folks that have been restricted due to DMCA complaint (first time offenders only) students, faculty and staff must take this to be reinstated on the network. It consists of the "What Do You Think" done by Jim Gibson et al out of University of Richmond Law, after that the user is presented with a series of informational link that cover university policy, the DMCA and what happens to repeat offenders. (permanent network sanctions, disciplinary probation) Thing with it is they can't do it from their own computer (we restrict all devices registered to a person that we've received a complaint for) and have to use a public machine in our labs, I think the 'inconvenience' helps bring it on home. We're hoping to institute a reinstatement fee to further make a point.

Right now we address our incoming students through a letter sent home (separate from other mailings) over the summer addressed to the student and their parents cautioning against using P2P filesharing software on the university network. I'm not sure it's working, our numbers are increasing as well! We've gotten hundreds and have also gotten many "settlement letters" this year... no subpoena's thankfully!

I'd be interested in hearing what other folks are doing for programs as well. IF there are schools out there with awareness campaigns the students go through as they matriculate I think it would make an amazing presentation for this summers symposia at Yale!

Best,

Judi Vellucci

We have seen quite an explosion in our copyright infringement notices in the past several months. This has finally got people wondering how we should tweak our judicial process. We are now looking at what sort of educational resources might be available, preferably online. I think we would be interested in exploring something for incoming students, as well as something for educational sanctions. I don't particularly want anything sponsored by the RIAA or MPAA, though.

We are just starting to do some of this for alcohol awareness and violations, but I'm not finding much for infringement. Are there services that I'm missing? are people doing this in-house?

Thanks,
Joel
