Placing a few analog phone line here and there would serve in emergencies. =
My suggestion is to either find some vandal resistant or some cheap throw =
aways. When we were in the phone hardware business the turn around was abo=
ut 33% replacement every year. Mainly that was due to students taking our =
phones and tossing them in the closets in favor for their coreless devices.
If you are charging for the service, why cut the revenue? Is there any pro=
fit in for the school or is the school having to pay to cover the services.
My suggestion would to have some sort of courtesy phone pool available in g=
eneral population accessible places restricted to local calling ect. At th=
e very least they can be available for a emergency situation.
Thank you,

Hi Joel-
We did the same thing several years ago- We have analog courtesy phones- t=
ypically one on each end of every floor in the Residence Halls. The proble=
m is that students keep destroying them! We've discussed a usage study to =
determine if they're being used at all at this point.

We've been working on reducing the number of telephone lines offered in stu=
dent rooms for the past couple of years, but are finally to the point where=
we get to start phasing them out completely. This will be a multi-year pr=
ocess as the income from our lines is linked into the financing plan for ou=
r fancy VoIP system.
It's been decided that there will be some courtesy phones in each building =
so there is something available in an emergency. Now we need to come up wi=
th the best solution to install. I am hoping that some folks may be able t=
o share what they are doing.
Here are some of our options:
* Go back to the good old days of cheap analog phones on the wall that w=
e can easily replace if they get damaged.
* Install VoIP phones similar to what we have in offices.
* Use some sort of hardened phone with emergency button, similar to what=
we have outside front doors.
* Something else?
Also, how many of these do you think is "enough"? One per building? One pe=
r lounge? Per floor?
Thanks!
