Another very good set of test tools is the internet2/ESnet tool kit called perfsonar. It is often identified with deployments on high speed research networks but we have used it, and continue to use it for baselining networks and finding oddities (as well as on the research nets). Its one way latency tools are pretty useful when you have a handful of the systems in a mesh strategically placed throughout the network.
It can be deployed as a live cd or installed as an operating system.
