We run multiple instances of FlexLM on our license server under VMWare
(VSphere 4) and have for approximately 4 years. No issues. We
currently run multiple vendor daemons, as provided by the software
vendors, and these listen on different ports. Over time, I have become
more familiar with the syntax of the FlexLM license files, and in the
future may consider running one daemon on one port, and combine the
individual license files into one.
The only (minor) hassles are those licenses which require a USB
dongle, but there are numerous boxes to connect a guest VM to USB
devices over the network (we use a Digi) - but be forewarned that some
vendors explicitly do not support license dongles because of the
potential to violate a license agreement (i.e. provide the same dongle
to multiple license servers).
We have had less than stellar results with Aladdin's (SafeNet) HASP,
which IMHO, is a pile. We use this for two license managers
(VectorWorks and Spartan) and each has a USB dongle. Since we added
this to our license server, we've had trouble with the USB dongles:
not only the two used by HASP but also with a third that is used by
FlexLM (ArcGIS 9). I've resorted to restarting the (HASP) license
manager services nightly to avoid problems. Luckily, we are upgrading
to ArcGIS 10 in Feb. which no longer requires a dongle.
