Hi, Doug,
That's largely going to depend on how your campus manages network
access. More difficult if you're using 802.1x authentication, might be
bothersome if you're using Cisco NAC, Bradford, or Impulse.
Using Impulse, we find most of these are recognized as mobile devices,
so policy requires web authentication, but no local agent. Clients
authenticate themselves, and they're on the network. Anything which
either can't be properly identified or can't authenticate by itself gets
an assigned IP address in DHCP, and a matching exemption in NAC.
We've not really bothered with special network policies for these, as
their capacity to infect their neighbors ranks far behind that of an old
unpatched Windows machine ;-) Neither do we support these as part of a
lab installation, merely noting that a lot of our clients have one or
the other of the things.
