I've seen complaints about the AT1700 and other network cards here, and
I would like to point out that there is another alternative, the ne2000
clone cards. These are compatible with every network software I've ever
seen, including a shareware DOS X server my suitemates have been looking
into which does not support the AT1700. They are the Novell defined
standard for PC ethernet, and the most common kind of ethernet card.
Installation is quick and painless, and it will immediately work with
just about anything. I'm running linux on it myself. They are readily
and cheaply available too.
I've been getting a group purchase deal for 3 port cards (with AUI and
UTP for MIT's resnet drops, and also BNC (coax) which is used in some
ILGs and elsewhere). I've been getting them for people for around $60
each, which is my cost (a few bucks off for quantity, plus reduced
shipping cost per unit keep the price low). If anyone is interested
in one of these let me know. If you want to get one yourself, they're
available everywhere, although the 3 port models are slightly harder
to find.
