I agree with everyone else, that it would be quite a boon to be able to use unused machines in the clusters. However, instead of locking people out from machines being used remotely from logging in at the actual machine, perhaps it would be better to do the reverse. That is, machines which are not being used can be telneted into, but when someone goes up to the machine and logs in, remote users are given some time period to logout, or be forced off. This way people with out remote access are not affected, as they cannot be prempted by remote users, and the remote users also benefit as they can telnet into additional machines. Carnegie Mellon does this with their Andrew workstations, so this shouldn't be too difficult of a modification to make to the login software.
Also, out of curiosity, does anyone know why the root password is made publicly availible on the workstations? I mean what do people do that they need to be root?
