Some 3Com cards have 10baseT interfaces - some don't. As someone else
replied, the Allied Telesis AT-1700AT is the card recommended by
Information Systems for most systems. The 3Com card will probably
work but you may want to find out the model number before you have
somebody send it to you. You can talk to the RCC in your dorm or send
mail to resnet-help@MIT.EDU if you need help selecting a card. We
can help you with the Allied Telesis cards. I'm not aware of any
problems with 3Com cards but we haven't tested them with all the
hardware/software combinations - so you may be on your own to find
technical help. If you are running Linux you may want to check with
SIPB about the card - you can send mail to linux-help@MIT.EDU. There
were some problems with the Ethernet drivers for the AT-1700AT in some
older Linux releases - so you should make sure you have the right
ones.
There is a lot more information in Techinfo - including the names of
the dorm RCCs and the MIT Computer Connection prices for both the
Allied Telesis and 3Com cards.
