emacs doesn't work on decstations

I'd like to thank everybody for their suggestions about setting the
terminal type in TNVT220, or the terminal type on Athena.
Unfortunatelyt, that wasn't the problem. Emacs simply doesn't work
when I'm telnetting from my PC to a Decstation. It's not a terminal
problem, cause vi works fine. Emacs simply hangs the session when I
try to run it. (Curiously, today it worked fine once, but I couldn't
get it to work again.)
My terminal type is set to dec-vt100, which works fine with vi, as I
said. Thanks in advance for any other ideas people may have.
