At Indiana University, we give our incoming 11,000+ residents a CD that
auto-configures their network settings, and offers, but does not require
installation of some other software, including NAV CE, for which we have a
site license, making it free to students. This fall we're taking the extra
step of detecting if they already have a previous version of NAV installed,
and/or have the most recent virus definition, at which point we'll display
an informational banner. However, our experience is that sometimes it's
difficult to impossible to de-install other vendors' anti-virus programs. So
we do not want to run the risk of rendering a student's computer unusable by
automatically installing NAV.

If I were a student at your school, I don't think I'd be too happy with you
automatically uninstalling the virus detection software I paid for.
We are considering having an anti-virus software requirement as part of our
usage agreement. We are considering having a campus wide anti-virus
license and distribution. However we're not going to automatically install
anything on a student's machine. We're planning to just say, "you're
required to have it and here's a way to get it free" In order for this to
work, you'll need to figure out how to deter people from not adhering to
the policy.
