Andrew,
About a month ago, I personally purchased one of Psiber's Pingers for
evaluation. The Pinger is a great tool for a 10BaseT or autonegotiating
network. On a 100BaseTX network the pinger will still identify a connection
(telling you if you have a good port or not) but that's about all it can
do. We currently use a 10BaseT network so it's fine for us.
Our ResNet employees check ports in students' rooms on a daily basis. The
pinger has the capability to verify a bad (or good) port in less than 15
seconds. I have tried PDAs, laptops and just about everything else, and
have found that this is the best yet (within its price range). The Pinger
gives accurate results EVERY TIME and anyone can use it.
I am so impressed with the Pinger that our department of Network Services
is evaluating the tool. Pending their evaluation, we will be looking into
the possibility of purchasing a couple through the university for our
ResNet and Help Desk.
I would be happy to answer any specific questions you may have.
Have a good day!

I have been searching for a low cost, reliable, easy to use connection
tester for a couple of years now and have tried several different testers
with poor results on the reliability scale. My ResNet network is in need
of a reliable tester because we have about 200-300 bad ports each year
(poor DSL implementation).
We've run across a new tester that looks like it might work and be low cost
($349). I'm wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with the
Pinger Network IP Tester from Psiber? They claim that it's a device that
get's an IP address from a DHCP server, pings, checks send and receive data
integrity, measures round trip time, and warns about reversed
polarity. This sounds like what we are currently doing with laptops.
.....Anybody have any experience with this device?

Thanks in advance for any replies,
