The 3C509 was listed in "Recommended Ethernet Adapters for use on
MITnet as of 11/24/1993" (see below).
I think a distinction should be drawn between "Recommended" and
"Supported". I have no objection to Information Services recommending
the AT-1700. It is cheaper at the MCC. However, I think that
supporting only one card per platform is silly and unfair to those who
purchased 3Com cards when they were still supported. Besides, the 3C509 is
not that much more than the AT-1700 at places other than the MCC. I
think that IS should continue to SUPPORT the 3C503 and 3C509 even if
they don't recommend them.
The following is from the Recommended Ethernet Boards list that was posted
in late November in TechInfo:

Linux, and Windows NT.
- The information here is subject to change frequently. Be sure to check
this chart (or the latest MIT Computer Connection catalog) before making
your purchase.
- If you live in a dorm, don't buy a card until second term. This chart
and/or Ethernet card prices may have changed by that time.
- If you have questions about a card that is not listed here, send mail
to <resnet-help@mit.edu>.
- More information on the Allied Telesis card will be available soon.
This card is less expensive than it's 3 Com counterpart.
- If you purchase a card that is not listed here, you will receive
limited support from Information Systems.
