I don't think the 3C509 was EVER on the Information Systems list of
supported Ethernet boards - up until a month or so ago the 3C503 was
the recommended board. The MCC used to sell both the 3C509 and the
3C503 - but they sell many products - some are supported by IS and
others are not. The current recommended board for ISA bus machines is
the Allied Telesis 1700AT (unless you are running Windows NT). The
MCC prices for the 3C509 and 1700AT aren't on-line in Techinfo but
I've seen mention that the 1700AT is $70 and the 3C509 is $145. One
of the criteria in choosing the 1700AT is we wanted to be able to sell
boards to students for under $100. The 3C509 didn't meet that
requirement and, since there were many others that did, wasn't really
evaluated. I'm sure it is a good board, and probably is a better one
than the much older 3C503, AND at 2/$99 is probably a great deal... it
just isn't supported by IS. That doesn't mean that it won't work or
that you can't use it in the dorms or elsewhere on MITnet.

This certainly _is_ the right place for this discussion. If you want
an "official" answer you can send mail to resnet-help@MIT.EDU but
anybody's comments or questions are welcome here!
