Our cost for a "normal" length drop is $325. That does not include the elec=
tronics.

Subject: Wiring costs
Does anyone have a back of the envelope/SWAG formula to estimate CAT6a wiri=
ng costs?
We are planning for new residence hall construction and trying to put toget=
her a realistic budget before we have floorplans. At this point we are est=
imating around 1000 jacks for a 480 bed building (480 jacks @ one port per =
pillow, 240 jacks to support 120 APs, 100 jacks for our office, and another=
180 for various social spaces and building control systems).
Our main campus network folks tell me to expect to pay around $600 per Cat6=
a drop. I've been told this is for wiring, termination labor, a jack on on=
e end and a patch panel; but that we'll need to add more $ for conduit, box=
es, and racks for patch panels. That seems a little high to me, but I know=
we use high quality materials (CommScope SYSTIMAX) that aren't cheap.
I'm assuming this number could also be used to estimate the cost of upgradi=
ng older Cat5e to Cat6a wiring. This project is making me realize that the=
17 year old Cat5e wiring in many of our buildings is nearing end of life (=
along with the fiber that feeds it) and we're about to have a huge sticker =
shock to maintain our existing buildings ability to support resident's dema=
nd for bandwidth.
Is $600/Cat6a drop in the ballpark for what others are experiencing in wiri=
ng installation costs? Do you have a similar number for fiber?
Thanks,
Noel McHugh
